| SALUTON! Mi lernas Esperanto kun:
Esperanto League for North America
My personal tutor's name is Bill and he marks and returns my exercises very quickly and is most helpful. It's FREE! I would thoroughly recommend! I am currently on lesson 4 of 10, but when I've finished this introductory course and got my diploma (!), I'll put a lot more information on this page. For now though, it's the same old "beginner's" vocabulary!

Nouns do not require a prefix "a" or "an"
"La" is "the for everything!
Subjective nouns end in "o"
Objective nouns end in "on"
So,
The boy drinks milk
would be
La knabo trinkas teon
Plurals
Subjective nouns end in "oj"
Objective nounds end in "ojn"
So,
Men read books
would be
Viroj legas librojn
Note:
"mi amas vin" does NOT mean "I love wine", but "I love YOU" (vi + n for objective)
|

Verbs are hideously EASY!!
present tense all verbs end in as
past tense all verbs end in is
future tense all verbs end in os
For example,
"la infino ludas" means "the child plays/is playing"
"la infino ludis" means "the child played" and
"la infino ludos" means "the child will play"
(OK, there are harder things, like imperatives and participals - but - later).

Note that "jes" is pronounced exactly the same as it's English equivalent, as "yes". J's are pronounced as "y"s.
The word for "no", "ne" (pronounced NEH) can be put into a sentence to change it's meaning to negative, for instance,
"Ĉu estas Plymouth en Italio?" "Ne, Plymouth ne estas en Italio". "Plymouth estas en Britio".
ĝ is pronounced as the "j" in "jail".

Ĉu (pronounced "choo") turns a statement into a question
for example,
"you drink tea", would be "vi trinkas teo"
"do you drink tea?" would be "Ĉu vi trinkas teo?"
or, you can simply ask, "Ĉu?", which means, "is it" "are they" etc.
where? - kie?
who?/what? - kiu?
why? - kial?

This link will take you to the 16 rules of Esperanto grammar!
And, adjectives always end in "a". Simple! No masculines, feminines or neutrals!
(e.g. La floro estas bela)
You can "feminise" any word, by adding "in", for example, man - viro; woman - virino
