24 August Athletic Bilbao-Parma (8.30pm local time) ?????????
On 25th August, Gianmarco Radice posted this to the parma-l:
Last night Parma played a friendly
against Real Saragozza, arranged in the deal for Milosevic. After being 2-0 at
the end of the first half, Parma showed some character and managed to equalise
the score with goals from Fuser and a last minute effort by Di Vaio. Parma
eventually lost on penalties following misses by Fuser and Bonazzoli. Positive
notes from the game come from a 'never say die' attitude from the team.
Attitude that was questioned after the dissapointing 5-0 defeat at Anfield
against Liverpool. Individually Milosevic had a good game, although he is still
lacking match fitness. Di Vaio continues his impressive pre-season form, and
will prove to be a key player coming on as a sub, or when called upon to
replace Amoroso. Appiah and Lamouchi, orchestrated the midfield very well in
the second half. Montano is displaying impressive skills and an increased
physical maturity. On the negative side, Baggio is still getting used to his
new position, and a blunder by him and Sartor led to Saragozza's second goal.
Thanks GIANMARCO! :) What happened to Bilbao though?!? :)
31 August Valencia-Parma (9pm local time)
An understrength Parma beat an understrength Valencia on penalties (Torrissi scoring the winner) after the game ended 0-0. I can't read too much into this, although Malesani is seeing it as an important victory after the disappointments (and downright hopelessness!) of the previous preseason games. Official Site match report.
5 September: Parma-Valencia (9pm)
We lost 3-1 to a totally make-do Valencia side. This is not GOOD! Here's what the official site had to say about the game (I could put a link - but it might disappear)
VALENCIA WIN MARSH TROPHY
They've met twice in a week and shared the spoils. After Parma walked away with the ‘Valencia Naranja’ trophy by virtue of their penalty win at the Mestalla stadium on Spanish soil, this time it was the turn of Valencia to steel the home team's thunder winning the Marsh trophy at Parma's expense in the Tardini stadium. Even though Parma worked tirelessly, the Spaniards were more incisive and hard to break down.
Things actually started well for the Gialloblu, when on 4 minutes - after a mistake in the Valencia defence - Johan Micoud went past the keeper, but his shot was blocked by the back tracking Valencia rearguard. The ball then fell to Milosevic, but before he could get a shot in, Valencia defender, Elias, hoofed it out for a corner. Three minutes later Marcio Amoroso tested Canizares in the Valencia goal but the Spanish international keeper was not found wanting.
Parma's play was full of attacking promise, especially on the flanks where Sergio Conceiçao never stopped running. But on 16 minutes it was Valencia who opened the scoring through Vicente, after the striker met a low cross from Juan Sanchez.
Parma replied immediately with a thunderous effort from Micoud that flew just over the bar after 20 minutes. They looked dangerous again on 24 minutes thanks to a sublime dummy from the Frenchman, which almost put in Milosevic.
Half an hour in Diego Fuser ran down the wing before putting in a looping cross, which almost caught out Canizares. A minute later Bernard Lamouchi had a shot, which unfortunately missed the target.
On 39 minutes Valencia made it 2-0 when Juan Sanchez came in from the left and unchallenged put the ball past the helpless Gigi Buffon. This body blow was then followed by a third Valencia goal on 47 minutes by Carew after some impressive play out on the right.
The second half was a different affair, however, as Alberto Malesani rang the changes bringing on six players. After only one minute of play Patrick Mboma was upended by Parri in the area. The Cameroon striker then stepped up and coolly to slot home the penalty.
Parma looked dangerous again on 61 minutes when a Conceicao free kick found Fabio Cannavaro whose header brought out a good save from Canizares. Valencia also came close on 75 minutes when with only Buffon to beat Carew put the ball wide. The final stages saw Parma come close again, firstly through Mboma who just failed to connect to a Javier Montano through ball and then through Emiliano Bonazzoli who missed a sitter on 88 minutes after some good work from Mboma.

Like a dimbo, I watched the Rai teletext first half!! :) We thought it was half-time (and 0-1 to PSV) and had a flick around - and there it was live on the German channel DSF - and it wasn't half-time and we were just in time to see PSV's second goal go in (your fault Gigi?). *massive groan*. I cannot comment therefore on the play in the 1st half. I tried to log onto the internet during halftime, as I had some rock business to attend to. Couldn't get through. Changed my ISP to a worse ISP seems!! (If it ain't broke . . . . ) Was furious. However, it allowed the phone to be free at least and, whilst "trying" to watch this game, in called some woman from some catalogue asking me "when was I going to pay?" Excuse me?? Call me anything you want - but I ALWAYS pay my bills. But she wasn't having it and suggested it was Royal Mail I should be throwing insults at; not her. "Can you give me a credit card payment". "How much is it you are saying I owe you" (one eye on the TV, still shaking with fury because of BT's inefficiency) "Your balance is £39.95 - your arrears £6.25" (think: "oh, reasons to be ringing up bothering people - THAT MUCH??") I am ashamed to say that I was exceedingly rude. Appallingly so. I gave her my cc details and told her to take the lot off and slammed the phone down. That is very out of character. I never am so rude as that (well! :)).
Oh yes (forgive me, that was an attempt to purge myself for the guilt of my rudeness to that INFURIATING woman - and to forgive myself for acting so impulsively that I paid the whole whack when I needed to only pay a fiver!!). Yes, there was a game to watch. Wow! We nearly did it!! Second half, Renzo had dispensed with Marcio and super Savo replaced him! Bravo Savo!! Two great goals!! From the claws of death and humiliation, we suddenly only needed two goals - and there was plenty of time. Sadly, we seemed to lose heart - looked faithless - hung heads - passed badly. Fabio was captain for the night (where WAS Lilian?) and shared the defence with his brother (until he was subbed near the end). Could hardly tell them apart - identical hair, complete with matching headbands. Therefore, I couldn't tell immediately which Cannavaro it was who accidentally knocked the petite lineslady to the ground. My, did she look grateful!! (Do it again! :)). A fabulous wonder goal from Montano! What a screamer!! 3-2. "Don't darned well celebrate, get on with it". Time was running out, you see. It ran out. Too late. Out to the Dutch. Commentary by Germans. Refereed by Colombo!!! :)
Not to worry. And this is not sour grapes, but I cannot help but seethe at the fact that the CL failures get a second shot in the UEFA Cup. It's really not on.
All the Italians are out. Italiane tutte elimnate. Fancy that!

QUICK MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
Nobody told me this game was being played today! I thought it would be on Thursday - missed practically all of the 1st half - and only caught the game at all by accident!! Got there just as Fabio was being callously whacked in the mouth by Max! Poor lad was a bit bloodied - but seems like he held onto his teeth.
I was seriously scared in the 2nd half, I have to say. Thought we were going out. We really didn't look like scoring. And then a lifeline! Boghossian's header from a Conceicao corner was saved by Mykland. With his hands!! Off he went and Amoroso scored from the spot. It was still tense stuff though, as one goal would do the Germans. They tried too. However, because they were going all out for goal, they left neat little gaps at the back and we took advantage of that. Junior (sporting a ridiculous neck thing to keep out the cold) flew up the wing, crossed to Conceicao (who looked offside - but still) - and it was 2-0! Phew! Not sure that we deserved it, but we go through to the next round. Oh, forgot to say - Fabio got sent off, 6 minutes after Mykland, for a 2nd yellow card. He went up for a challenge leading with his arm - and the ref decided it was an elbow. The other not so good thing to report is that Fuser went off near the end, injured. Let's hope it's nothing too serious.
What do you reckon on this??

Hideous, hideous colour or what??? Wish they'd all been wearing the pink shirts as sported by Buffon! I really don't like this "grey". Teams

Parma 2 1860 Munchen 2

Appiah 2' Beierle 90'
Today was Thanksgiving Day in the USA. Not a lot to be thankful for with this game though and, although I watched it live on TV, I am not going to give a match "report" (one of those can be found on the Official Site anyway, if you care to believe what they say.) I intend merely to make some personal reflections on what I watched.
We were dreadful.
OK, in the 1st half we weren't so bad - it seemed - although I do think that the Germans gave us a head-start by not being there themselves for the first 20 minutes or so. Both Appiah and Micoud's goals were absolute gifts. But, in the 2nd half we were ABSENT. Totally rubbish! Malesani's tactics bother me too. OK, so he realised that 1860 were having the better of the game and looking likely to score - so he needed to shore up the defence - but why did he put on Thuram and take off our ONLY darned striker, Montano????????? Why hadn't Lilian played from the beginning anyway? Why had he subbed Fuser with Conceicao at half-time? Fuser had done a good job - there was no need to sub him. Why couldn't both Fuser and Conceicao have played?? As it turned out, Conceicao was useless and needs a firm talking to. How come he can play wonderfully one day and not turn up the next??
I am so disenchanted with the team right now that I am beginning to question whether I am still a fan. I find myself yearning for the return of Ortega and Baggio. I just cannot settle with these lads - they bother me. There's just something that doesn't quite fit right. I cannot look upon the likes of Bolano or Lamouchi or Micoud - or even Almeyda - and think of them as "one of ours". It appears to me that none of them actually want to be playing for Parma. Added to that, the fans of Parma bother me also. There is no doubt whatsoever that there were more 1860 fans in the Tardini on Thursday night than there were Parma fans. And those fans that had made the effort needn't have bothered - so quiet were they. What's up with the people of Parma?? The fans show up in absolute paltry numbers for European games - how can they expect the players to perform to the best of their abilities, therefore?
Hmm, I guess I am still a fan - or else why would any of this be bothering me? However, I think we can (almost) safely say that that's the end of the UEFA Cup run for us (I hope not though, of course) - and I really do not think we are good enough, particularly with our lack of strikers right now, to contest the league. Does this sound like I have given up already? Yep, I have kind of - and that's a pity. But if the players don't show any enthusiasm, how am I or others like me, meant to? Buck up your ideas lads - play with some darned conviction for goodness sake.

A 6.00pm (GMT) kick-off. Again, nobody was showing this game (or if they were, I missed it!) and it wasn't on the radio thing, so I cannot make any real comments. By looking at it though, I can't say that the team Alberto put out was a particularly defensive one. The goal from Sokoto came from a Torrisi error (see the goal on here if you want, although the playback is dodgy; keep pressing "pause" and "play" - it'll come in the end!). It seems, from what I've read, that we were fortunate to survive as Dinamo threw everything at us, forcing numerous good saves from Gigi. On 88 minutes, Mr Gallagher sent off Sartor for what was (according the Rai text) a 2nd yellow card - quickly following on from the first. But we got through. We don't want Barca thank you! Or Rangers!! Or Werder Bremen, come to that!!

 | The only way I could follow this game was through watching the Rai text! Not very satisfactory. It was being shown on some obscure TV channel - and not even covered by the Official site's Real audio link. Bah! Well, it's good to have won this game - and good to see Amoroso scoring both goals. However, Amoroso! might not have been on the pitch had it not been for a 20th minute injury to Di Vaio. That's worrying. Then, Amoroso | himself was subbed on 82', after himself picking up an injury. Looks like both could be out for the Milan game next week - so we must rely on a new partnership of Milosevic and Mboma. I did see a very brief MPG of the goals (see this page and click on "UEFA, i gol". Hopefully 2-0 will be adequate if we can keep tight (hah!) at their home - but it's not going to be easy. Check out this page of pictures to see what kind of welcome we might expect!!

MATCH COMMENTARY
(No, I'm not so daft - I wrote this for somebody else - just as well use it here!)
Listening to this on the radio. It's hard going. Especially with my fractured pelvis! No, it's not - but it feels like it! Can hardly bear to sit. Torn gluteus minimus or, possibly, psoas. No, I do not know how!
Oh, I want to tell this bloke to shut it already! You would think I'd be fluent by now. Course, I am - but these people on the radio do not speak properly, of that I am certain!
Junior, is he ours?? Doesn't sound like a Macedonian, does it??
Anyway, I am polishing a hunk of amethyst, using a pot of yoghurt filled with soapy water and some cotton wool. Just as well. It sits on the computer as it's meant to take away the negative energies. It doesn't.
Well, halfway through the half, Conceicao scored - I know that - is for definite. Near the end of the half though, *perhaps* Milosevic scored to make it 2-0. I really am not sure. Will check out the score on Rai at half-time. Checked! Nope just 1-0, according to them. Conceicao on 23 minutes.
Time to wash my hair!
So, I didn't have time to wash my hair.
Anyway the match has kicked off again, but have no idea what's going on. Buffon's number 77 now. He changed from 88 after some accused him of being a nazi sympathiser - 88 being nazi numbers - although I forget why.
Well, if it is still only 1-0 - then that's not good. I reckon we need at least one more goal. But I am not all that confident that Parma will do anything *at all* this season. They have their cup game on Sunday, you know. Venezia they drew. I see Baggio R went to Breschia. That's the finish for Florin Raducioiu then perhaps.
The match seems to have gone dull. Even this excitable man is quite quiet (can hear some terrible interference music - tinny and annoying - why can't they tune in properly?). Amoroso's just gone off for Di Vaio. Or has he just come on?? I really am having problems following this. Probably due to the fact that I slept til 10.45 this morning and have been like a ragdoll all darned day! Nope, definitely he (Amoroso) went off and Di Viao came on. Well, never noticed A mentioned all the rest of the match. No change there then. What a waste of money, although I hope he proves me wrong one day very soon.
Buffon just made a save.
Cannavaro's done something. In the area. Don't know what. Penalty? No, I don't think so. Maybe he was booked; I don't know - there was a lot of noise though. Maybe he did something amazing, like a clean tackle! (Didn't mean it, Fab!) DUE-ZERO!!! DI VIAO!! That's better! About 15 minutes left by my reckoning. Come on boys, see if you can get another. Seems to me that Amoroso is a liability! Two away goals should be enough though, I suppose.
Time to munch an apricot pie! Mr Kipling's. Deep filled. Deep filled with darned air, if you ask me!!! And surely it's just apricot jam?!? Pastry's not cooked either.
Well, there is far more mention of Di Vaio than of Amoroso, that is for sure. Three more minutes to go. Something very urgent is going on now. Crowd groaning; booing; commentator going on some. I wish he would speak properly, then I could understand him! They are booing Milosevic. Did he get sent off - or was he pretending to be injured or something? Nope, Milosevic hasn't been sent off - the crowd are booing him to death! Must've dived! :)
End, I believe. 2-0 to Parma. OK, can take that.
On checking the Rai Teletext after the game, I noticed that one of the Pobs got sent off on 87'. That must've been what all the commotion was with Milosevic then! Naughty, Savo! :)

Match Commentary
Oops! I seem to have done this the wrong way around! Never mind - scroll down please! :)) | Parma have drawn Venezia in the 1st round, proper. Ties will be played on 17th September (away) and 24th September.
Result: Parma 6 Venezia 2 on aggregate. Match reports HERE
Quarter Final
We played Inter Milan on Wednesday 29th November in the first leg. Seems like we could walk the 2nd leg, huh? I confess that, although it was live on Rai, I didn't realise that and watched the David Beckham documentary by accident! Saw the end though - but no goals. Official page report on here. Looking good - but somehow I'm not too excited about this. Perhaps I will be *when* we get to the final. How wonderful that final 2 seasons ago against Fiorentina was!
Semi Final
Wednesday 24th January - the 1st leg at Udinese was called off because of rain and a flooded pitch. We await a new date.
Thursday 1st February - the rearranged 1st leg at Udinese. 2-1 to them.
Nobody was thinking much about the game. (Probably least of all me until 6.30, when I found out we were 24 minutes into the 2nd half - what kind of time was that??). No, nobody much was taking notice of the game - certainly not the Italian media. They carped on and on and on about Sacchi. I wonder what was going through the players' minds then? I know what was going through mine!! I reckon Everton can pass the ball around better than this lot!! They were terrible, from what I saw. I didn't see Amoroso's 5th minute goal, of course (he was all decked up in scarf and gloves) - but I saw Udinese's brace. Disgraceful defending. Really. They were all in a little bunch, like how 5-year-olds play in the park. And why was Buffon obviously being "rested"?? Do goalkeepers really get that worn out?? What's going on? I don't care two hoots about the coppa, quite frankly - but, let's face it, this could be our only chance of qualifying for Europe next season. Anyway, we're 2-1 down. Home leg next week. Not holding my breath.
Teams
Udinese: Turci, Zamboni, Sottil, Thuram, Bertotto, Bisgaard (63' Margiotta), Fiore, Giannichedda, Walem (73' Alberto), Diaz, Jorgensen (81' Gaarde), Sosa.
Parma: Guardalben, Falsini, Thuram, F.Cannavaro, Torrisi, Micoud, Bolano, Lamouchi, Fuser (46' Conceicao), Mboma, Amoroso (88' Di Vaio)
Coach: Tombolini (ah! Danny Kaye!)
Bookings: Falsini, Diaz, Amoroso
Goals: Amoroso 5'; Margiotta 75', 92'
12th February: Quick update (apologise for the lateness). We are through to the final of the coppa italia. The match report from the Official Page can be found on here. This is a relief - and, if Fiorentina (who we will meet in the final) play anywhere near as badly as they did on Sunday, the coppa is ours. A route into Europe for next season, at least. I cannot say that we played anything other than "averagely" in that 2nd leg though. Doggedly, but averagely. I wasn't impressed.
